EHIC / Carte Européene d'Assurance Maladie

Existing residents should note that all travel to other EU member states including the UK requires a Carte Europeenne d’Assurance Maladie/ EHIC (which replaces the paper form E111) in order to obtain “necessary” healthcare.

If you have been living outside the UK for more than 3 months you may have to pay for hospital treatment whilst in the UK . If you do not normally live there then you may be required to pay for any treatment you might need. This is regardless of whether you are a British citizen or have lived or worked there in the past.

The card is valid for one year and can be obtained on application to your CPAM, or the UK department for work and pensions (DWP) Centre for non-residents, if you are covered by an E106.

If you do not have access to the French system, you must ensure that your private health insurance covers such trips outside France.

To apply online, see here and enter your postal code to link to your local CPAM.
